Readers will travel back in time to ancient Babylonia, Egypt, and Greece. They will meet the world's first astronomers, mathematicians, and physicists and explore the lives and ideas of such famous people as Pythagoras, Archimedes, Brahmagupta, al-Khwarizmi, Fibonacci, Ptolemy, St. Augustine, and St. Thomas Aquinas. Hakim will introduce them to Aristotle—one of the greatest philosophers of all time—whose scientific ideas dominated much of the world for eighteen centuries. In the three-book The Story of Science series, master storyteller Joy Hakim narrates the evolution of scientific thought from ancient times to the present. With lively, character-driven narrative, Hakim spotlights the achievements of some of the world's greatest scientists and encourages a similiar spirit of inquiry in readers. The books include hundreds of color photographs, charts, maps, and diagrams; informative sidebars; suggestions for further reading; and excerpts from the writings of great scientists.

Please note that a science curriculum developed in conjunction with The National Science Teacher's Association and John's Hopkins University has been designed to go with each of Hakim's Story of Science books.  Teacher's Quest Guide: Aristotle Leads the Way (The Story of Science) This series may be a good fit for you and your middle school/ Jr. High level student(s) if:1. You want your science in chronological order like you want your history in chronological order. If something like Bauer's Story of the World 1-4 and Greenleaf's Famous Men of _________________ series appeal to you, you'll probably like this too. This book begins with the earliest recorded history and works its way to the 1500s CE. If you're doing a 4 year history rotation:Ancients for 1 year (1 year=4 quarters/2 semesters/3 trimesters)Medieval for 1 yearEarly Modern for 1 yearLate Modern for 1 yearthen this science will finish ahead of your history. You could change the pace to match history more closely, you could supplement with something else to fill the gap or you would need to be OK with science and history not being on the same time frame. If you're doing a compressed history rotation in 3 years :Ancients 3 semestersMedieval 3 semestersEarly Modern 3 semestersLate Modern for 3 semestersHakim's science series will dovetail with your history nicely.2. You want your science in historical context.Science and history have always influenced each other and this curriculum reinforces that.3. You want your science integrated with other subjects. There are a few assignments in each lesson that include a related activity in math, history, literature, art, and/or language arts. This not only reinforces the historical context, it can help a child who isn't particularly interested in science stay a little more engaged.4. You want your science from a secular point of view, even if you're religious. The writers were respectful of religious views by stating in the teacher's guide, page 10, "6. Ask students whether any human really knows for certain how the universe began. (Allow for religious convictions in accepting responses.)" As a Christian I appreciate that this material is both secular and uncompromising while still being polite to religious people.5. You want an entire academic year's worth of readings, assignments and activities in one package.Get the textbook, the workbook and the teacher's guide. If you plan and prep an entire year for a 36 hanging file folder system (or something like it) you'll have to do a little adjusting because the number of lessons and units aren't evenly divisible by a standard 36 week American school year. Twice a unit you'll need to combine 2 lessons together;easily done.6. You're a homeschooler willing to adapt a classroom curriculum to your home setting.Homeschoolers were kept in mind as this curriculum was written. Tweaking a bit here and there is simple. The only thing your student won't be doing is group work, but those assignments can be easily tweaked for individuals.
