Oh, if this only could have been refined and completed by the author himself rather than pieced together by his family and friends. They did an amazing job, but it still feels somewhat fragmented and disjointed at times. There are moments of incredible poetry where the imagery is lush and tactile. There are passages where Gay’s insight into the human spirit overwhelms you with power. But, it doesn’t flow seamlessly, as should be expected from a novel stitched together from old notebooks and typed pages. The protagonist, Billy Edgewater, may be autobiographical, but he is inscrutable and often unlikeable. Roosterfish and Bradshaw are amazing characters; among the most distinct and memorable Gay has ever created. There isn’t a real plot, and the conflict with the “bad guy” is never fully developed. But, every few pages or so, you will read a phrase or passage that makes you pause and savor it, much like I felt when I read The Long Home for the first time. There are scenes that will make you laugh out loud and then cringe. You are constantly reminded of Gay’s gift and constantly reminded of our loss at his passing.
